What can i put over temper paint on canvas so it doesn't smear?

i used tempera paint cakes on a canvas and i works good and has a good look, but i was wondering if there is anything i can put over top to coat the tempera so it doesn't smear when touched. this is for a present. can you spray it with a matte finish like you would charcoal or pastel?
