What can I do to make my lap top run faster? Tried everything I know. Please help:)?

I just upgraded my Roadrunner to the speed just bellow "turbo charged" & my lap top is running a bit faster but there still seems to be a problem with speed. Things I have tried so far: scanning & defraging C & D, ran complete CCleaner, ran Malwarebytes, ran a full virus scan, ran anti-spyware, got completely rid of programs I don't use. Is there anything else I can do? I should mention my lap top is kind of older, it's an HP still running Windows XP with a wireless Netgear router. I don't know how to check how fast it is or how many GB's it is or whatever "technical" terms are used. Any suggestions on what else to do? Thank you.
