Whats better in increasing muscle m, doing few reps with heavy weights or lots of reps with lighter weights?

I've been working out for about a month now, and I have decided to use heavy weights with which I can only do between 10 and 15 reps without needing rest, increasing the weight lifted progressively every month. Would it be more effective however to use a lighter weight and do more repetitions?
